We opened our self-serve dog wash in July as an addition to our successful all natural pet food and retail store. We decided early on, after a bad experience with one of our customers, NOT to offer customers nail clippers. However, we also do not provide nail clipping services or grooming. Our mission was to be just an upscale do-it-yourself pet wash using all natural products, and our pet wash is a very peaceful setting for nervous dogs. We love it. We get people coming in who want to use our pet wash, but seem to want their dog's nails clipped for them as well. Most people who come in don't want their dog's nails clipped, but those who do will go to our competition down the street (not a very nice atmosphere in there I should say--very noisy and dirty). OUR QUESTION IS: IS IT POSSIBLE TO RUN A SUCCESSFUL SELF-SERVE PET WASH WITHOUT OFFERING NAIL CLIPPING SERVICES? I don't want to change the peaceful atmosphere of our pet wash with dogs screaming while their getting their nails clipped. Please...any advise!

At our SSDW we use a professional nail grinder to do the nails. I feel that it is less invasive and the dogs don't get as stressed as they do with the clippers.

Nail clipping by someone who knows what they are doing doesn't take long enough to cause a ruckus, and most dogs, even if they don't like it, are quiet (however, their caretakers may not be, which is the problem in the first place!). Nail trimming is a money maker that takes very little time, but I wouldn't do it unless you are comfortable with it. You might want to get:

"How To Trim Your Dog's...Nails! And Why You're Probably Dumber Than Your Dog" at http://www.dagBOOKS.com

I found a vet tech who comes in twice a month, on weekends, to do nail trims... split the nail trim fees 60/40... they are always busy days, and many dogs get the "oh, you were so good for your nail trim, lets' get you a toy or treat" treatment which is good for the retail

I would agree with Dave. Most dog's don't make a fuss over it. Alot of times it is the owner who makes the situation worse although they think they're helping. Not to say that all dogs are a piece of cake and some can be dramatic but I don't think it will change the atmosphere of your self serve. And it's always ok to tell a customer to bring their dog to the vet if the dog becomes too difficult. It's a good money maker. We do as many as 100 per month. Multiply that by $8 and it is well worth it in my opinion.
